code head

Oh crap. It’s after 1.30am and I’ve been sucked into a vortex of installation, customisation and FTPing. Serves me right for trying to set up a website in the first place.

While I’m here though, I might as well mention Buenos Aires 1977 which I caught at the London Film Festival this afternoon, a film about torture in Argentina which managed to be harrowing and nerve-wracking without resorting to much in the way of, well, torture. Of the few such scenes that there were, several saw the camera fixed firmly on the faces of those overseeing the electrocution, beatings and waterboarding. Not only did it work on the whole ‘less is more’ concept, but there was ample opportunity to admire their retro ‘taches which they all but twiddled as they listened to the screams. Still, good stuff and heartily recommended.

I’ve got one eye on Tropical Malady which is currently showing on Film4 but I’ve set the video so I’ll indulge fully in its insanity later. I never intended to be up this late.

There will be other stuff here apart from film, promise. And this will get better when I’ve had some sleep.

[...] I’ve already blabbed about Buenos Aires 1977 but even better was Shane Meadow’s belting This Is England. The first half was the most surprising and unexpected treat I’ve seen in the cinema for a long time – a 12-year-old lad hooks up with a gang of skinheads who instead of being neo-Nazi hardcases are instead lovable mates who just fancy a bit of a laff. Then halfway through the real neo-Nazis turn up and it takes a much more sinister turn. My expectations were completely subverted although I made an arse of myself being interviewed for MySpace Film channel on the way in. Hopefully that never made it off the cutting room floor. [...]
